Here's a new feature on Blorge.com: A tribute to Apple's history.
A few times per week, I'll cover a unique, perhaps even an important milestone in the history of Apple. Today's is a fun one:
iPod for under $400?
Back in 2003, Buy.com (which still exists today) was selling a 15G iPod for $365 after a $20 discount. That's right, an iPod with technically less storage than today's smallest size iPad, cost nearly $400.
Today, you could buy an iPhone (with contract) and iPad Mini for much cheaper.
iPod Available at Bose, Circuit City
Obviously, the iPod was all the rave. So much so that it was worth reporting that Apple would sell the music device in Bose and Circuit City retail stores in 10 GB, 15 GB and 30 GB models. Additionally, VW was also giving away free iPods with the purchase of a new Volkswagen Beetle.
Circuit City went out of business years ago and people now buy from Bose online because of the great financing deals.
Apple + Movies? Nah...
Back on July 14, 2013, Apple was rumored (via Bloomberg) to start selling movies in its iTunes store. Crazy, right?
Low and behold, the rumor proved to be true and now millions of movies are downloaded and streamed each month.
Microsoft Office and Virtual PC coming to Mac?
It was in 2003 that Microsoft and Apple came to an agreement to bring Word, Excel and PowerPoint to the Mac. Prices weren't cheap. The pro edition of Office was $500! Students could pay $150.
iSight built into displays?
This came a few days later in 2003, but I couldn't wait.
On July 19, media reports said Apple was working on building iSight technology into all of its displays. What a concept!
Of course, we all know that all Apple products (outside of a TV... for now) include a camera for FaceTime. But they're no longer called iSights. Too bad, I always liked that name.
