Samsung has reportedly inked a deal to supply the central chipset for the iPhone from 2015, following reports Apple has chosen to work with China's TSMC to develop chips for the iPad and iPhone.
Industry sources who spoke to The Korea Economic Daily on Sunday, said Samsung Electronics will supply 14 nm-size A9 chips to power a future iPhone version which could be released in 2017.
The report also estimated this to be iPhone 7, with production slated to begin in 2015 and to be launched in the second half of the year, the report said. There is not mention the chip could be supplied to the iPad.Apple had stopped buying iPhone screens from Samsung and switched to LG Display, which also supplies some screens used in the iPads. However, reports suggest Samsung will supply Apple with retina display screens for the new iPad range.
The Cupertino-based company also chose to work with TSMC over Samsung to develop chips for the iPad and iPhone in June this year, a separate WSJ report noted.
