Those holding out for the Retina iPad Mini 2 release date might find their patience tested a little further than they bargained for. While the iPad Mini 2 is still widely expected to launch before the end of the year, reports have surfaced suggesting that Apple has not in fact graced it with a Retina panel after all.
Instead the Retina iPad Mini will launch later in 2014 - this year's iPad Mini 2 will be a more modest update.
Now, this must at this stage be digested with the usual grain of salt as Apple has of course revealed no details whatsoever as to its iPad plans for this year or any. However, the rumor is certainly credible as the Cupertino company has apparently been toing and froing with its decision as to whether to go with a full-fat Retina iPad Mini 2, or instead launch a much cheaper model.
This fall is expected to bring the launch of the Google Nexus 7 2 and perhaps the first Microsoft Surface Mini tablet - both of which will be gunning for the same market as the iPad Mini 2. Last time around, the iPad Mini lost a great deal of luster in the eyes of consumers when it hit the market for well over $100 more than the Google Nexus 7, without justifying the inflated price with new-generation specs and features.
As such, the chances are Apple being able to launch a Retina iPad Mini 2 for around the $200 are pretty much zero - a $200 non-Retina iPad Mini 2 on the other hand isn't entirely implausible.
If true, this would then put the launch of the Retina iPad Mini 2 well into the spring of next year, allowing the standard iPad Mini 2 to be one of this year's hottest holiday stocking-stuffers.
Apple has refused to pass comment on the matter or answer any direct questions.
