Rating: :: BOARDING OF THE DEAD

Zombies!!! Review

Kill zombies and gather supplies to "get to the choppa" in this zombie-themed board game.

Zombies!!! is a port of a board game of the same name in which players build their zombie town while having to escape from it at the same time. To escape, a heliport is eventually built into the environment by a player, and the first one to reach it wins. Of course, every piece of the game's city is teeming with zombies, so players need to be strategic about their plans for escape. It is precisely this strategic element that makes Zombies!!! a successful game.

To play Zombies!!!, each player begins in the city square and plays a distinct environment to attach to this square. Whether it be an army surplus store or a fire station, these environments are then populated by zombies and supplies by each player before movement begins. To move, players roll a dice and then choose their selected path. If a path is blocked by zombies, a combat phase begins in which players have to roll a four or higher to dispatch the threat.

Like many mainstream board games (e.g. Monopoly), Zombies!!! introduces random game elements via dice rolls and card draws. However, these systems do not necessarily make or break a player's ability to win. Through strategically moving to collect supplies, discarding unwanted cards, and moving zombies each turn, players can control enough other elements of the game to win, even if they have a few bad rolls or draw some poor cards. This makes Zombies!!! much more compelling to replay because each subsequent session allows players to hone their strategies while perhaps trying to hinder their opponents' plans.

While the game itself is fun though, Zombies!!! isn't a particularly good looking game. It's visuals look a little sloppy, but more than anything the game just seems really, really dark. This didn't make the game unplayable by any means, at least in the rooms I played Zombies!!!, but it did stick out, and I found myself squinting at times when I felt I shouldn't need to.

On top of this, Zombies!!! only offers local multiplayer, so unless players have friends around with them, they can only really play against the computer. Thankfully though, there are a few different game modes that can make even playing the CPU not feel too tiresome.

In the end, Zombies!!! is still a pretty great zombie-themed board game. Its mechanics are sound, it has multiple game types, it allows for strategy, and the way game allows for the city to be built differently each game keeps the experience from ever feeling stale. Despite its drawbacks, I'd say Zombies!!! is worth picking up, especially for fans of board games and/or zombies.
