A federal judge has ruled that Apple conspired with publishers to raise the price of electronic books at retail.

According to a report from Reuters, a judge with the U.S. District Court in Manhattan will set a trial to determine damages.

The ruling is a victory for the U.S. government, which sued Apple and five book publishers for hatching a plan to hike up e-book prices to eliminate Amazon's $9.99 price option.

'Apple's conduct cannot be excused,' said Department of Justice attorney Lawrence Buterman at the start of the civil trial. 'Consumers in this country paid hundreds of millions of dollars more for e-books than they would have.'

The five publishers named in the lawsuit have settled.
