Apple MacBook Pro with Haswell benchmarked on Geekbench

Yesterday, a result posted on the Web site of Primate Labs' Geekbench benchmark software appears to have outed the new 15-inch Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display.

The computer is named 'AAPLJ45,1', and is equipped with the fourth-generation Intel Core i7-4950HQ (clocked at 2.4GHz) processor. It performs slightly better than the current MacBook Pro with Retina Display, which has a 2.8GHz Core i7-3840QM chip. MacRumors suggests that this model is the new 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display, which has yet to be updated with the new Intel processors.

While the performance gains are modest, one of the main advantages of the new Intel Haswell processors is battery life. The latest 13-inch MacBook Air, for example, doesn't perform very much better than last year's version, but got a huge bump in battery stamina from 7 hours to 12 hours.

Another interesting tidbit from the results is the absence of information about discrete graphics. Primate Labs' John Poole told MacRumors that the said machine seems to just sport the integrated Iris 5200 graphics from Intel. However, Poole adds that it is possible that the benchmark failed to detect the presence of discrete graphics.

According to tests on AnandTech, the Iris 5200 performs well, but still can't match up to the Nvidia GT 650M graphics found in the current 15-inch MacBook Pro. However, the integrated solution will probably be sufficient for users who don't play games, and the savings in battery consumption will likely more than make up for any loss in graphics performance.
