Apple could be testing 13in displays, large iPad or touch Macbook Air a ...

Apple has apparently placed orders for 13in touchscreen displays from its component suppliers, fuelling rumours of a large-format iPad or touch-sensitive MacBook Air laptop.

The Wall Street Journal cites anonymous sources which say Apple has ordered prototype smartphone screens larger than the 4in diagonal previously seen in the company's iPhone 5, alongside a 13in tablet display.

When sat alongside the competition, the iPhone 5 is looking a little on the small side. Thee majority of its rivals, like the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One and Sony Xperia Z all have displays approaching 5in.

A 13in tablet is somewhat unlikely, however. Few are currently on sale, with most tending to be convertible tablets - either with a rotating screen or removable keyboard. There's currently no hint from suppliers as to the exact product Apple has planned, so a touch-sensitive laptop, convertible or giant tablet are all potentially on the cards.
