Andy Vuong's Mailbag: Buying an iPhone for use in US and Thailand

Q: I plan to buy my first iPhone and want to use it in the U.S. as well as in Thailand. What do I have to do to make sure this will be possible?

A: You can buy an unlocked iPhone 5 directly from Apple for $649 and purchase a prepaid nano SIM card in Thailand. Depending on how long you'll be in Thailand, it might make more sense to purchase an iPhone from one of the major U.S. carriers and subscribe to their international plan for your travels. Another option would be to purchase an unlocked iPhone 4S or later from eBay or Craigslist. AT&T, the first carrier to carry the iPhone, began unlocking iPhones for subscribers who completed their contracts last year, so there are plenty of unlocked iPhones floating around on the secondary market. Lastly, you can pay a third-party company anywhere from $20 to $50 to unlock the phone for you, but that will void the device's warranty.
